Cost guide

How much does a new bathroom cost in the UK?

Bathroom costs vary more than most home jobs because the suite, tiles and layout changes can be anything from basic to premium. Keep labour and total cost apart when comparing.

Published benchmark

  • Labour for fitting a bathroom: typically about £2,000–£4,000.
  • Full installation totals vary very widely: roughly £2,500 to more than £30,000.

Not included / caveats

  • Labour figures do not include the suite, tiles or brassware.
  • Labour and total cost aren't interchangeable — don't compare a labour-only quote with a supply-and-fit quote.

The full range is very wide, so use the labour benchmark and an itemised list of materials to compare quotes, not the headline total. These are not Bobby Build prices.

What changes the price

Layout changes

Moving the toilet, shower or bath changes waste and supply pipes, which can add a lot of work.

Who supplies what

A fitter supplying the suite and tiles prices very differently from labour-only.

Trades involved

Plumbing, tiling, electrics, plastering and decorating may be in one quote or split. Make sure none is missed or counted twice.

Hidden condition

Rotten floorboards or old pipework are often found only once the old suite is removed. Ask how surprises are priced.

Comparing quotes like for like

  • Labour only, or supply and fit?
  • Which trades are included, and who handles notifiable electrical work?
  • How are waste and the old suite removed?
  • How are unexpected repairs priced?

What to include in your job post

  • Room size, and whether the layout stays the same or the toilet, bath or shower moves.
  • Who supplies the suite, tiles and brassware — and whether they're already bought.
  • Photos of the current room, including the boiler or hot water cylinder if nearby.
  • Whether you need the room usable at any point (it may be your only toilet).
