Cost guide

How much does a handyman cost in the UK?

Handyman jobs are usually priced by the hour, by the half-day or as a fixed price for a list. Here's one published benchmark and tips for getting comparable prices.

Published benchmark

Source: Fantastic Services — Handyman prices. One company's published cost guide (market estimates), checked October 2026.

  • Around £30 an hour outside London, and roughly £45–£65 an hour in London and the South East.
  • Minimum charges of about £40–£60 outside London.
  • The guide says figures include VAT where applicable.

Not included / caveats

  • Materials are often charged on top.
  • A benchmark from one company's published guide — not definitive prices, an exhaustive market survey or Bobby Build quote data.

These figures come from a single provider. Local quotes can be higher or lower depending on the tasks and travel. These are not Bobby Build prices.

What changes the price

Number of tasks

One visit for a combined list is usually better value than several separate call-outs.

Parts and fixings

Say whether you've bought them. Heavy items need fixings suited to your wall type.

Travel and minimum charges

Many handymen have a minimum charge, so very small single jobs can cost more per task.

Qualified work

Gas, and electrical work beyond simple swaps, need suitably qualified trades. Ask rather than assume.

Comparing quotes like for like

  • Hourly, half-day or a fixed price for the whole list?
  • Is there a minimum charge, and does travel count?
  • Are parts and fixings included?
  • Does the price include VAT?

What to include in your job post

  • A numbered list of each small task, so it can be priced as one visit.
  • A photo of each item and where it goes (wall type if known: plasterboard, brick).
  • Whether you've bought the parts or fixings, or want the handyman to supply them.
  • Any time window when someone will be home.
